I went to Oxford today on the 2.20pm coach. I had some time to spend - in Blackwells. I didnt buy anything but I picked up the fact that Hanslick developed Kant's aesthetic analysis for musik. Something I browsed suggested that Kant did not make much progress with musical aesthetics because he wasnt able to access very much in the way of formal analysis. This is all very promising.
I also delved into the LW section. His remarks on aesthetics were just too expensive. It emerges that D Pears is now regarded as one side in LW-studies and that the New Wittgenstein disputed with his position. We are now in the phase where reconciliation is being attempted. There s a lot to dig into here.
There is no question that D Pears' approach to Solipsism in the Tractatus is at odds with Strawson on Selves.
I got to the Dept of Education for the seminar by 5 o clock. I managed to offer a comment on my experience of being a personnel manager. Then it was back to the Kings Arms to meet Lawrence at 8pm - a great deal to talk about. Then back on the 10.15pm coach to Heathrow. Time well spent.
