I have been in Brill this weekend - watching the last night at the Proms on Saturday. After that I chanced upon an article by S Heaney on S Plath - really interesting. He thinks from Oct 62 to Feb 63 she was overtaken by a powerful and genuine poetic voice. I find this very convincing and not a little disturbing.
Sunday evening a jazz 4tet appeared at the local pub, the Pointer. It was led by N Haines who started out in NZ. He studied jazz in NYC with George Coleman and Joe Lovano. They sounded pretty good as you might expect. String bass, drums and gtr with NH on soprano tenor and flute. I liked the sop best. I spoke to NH in the interval and he invited me to sit in on flute but I declined - my muscles are not in any kind of shape. Nice to be asked tho. I bought a CD which so far I have heard twice and sounds pretty good. They maybe back next month.
