There are five new pieces at the top of the Widget - Surrogate, Planting Kanal, Allotment, Garden Jimmy and Legal.

Last night on R3 there was a concert of 20C Polish composers - two pieces by Lutoslawski and in particular two sets of songs by Szymanowski. He had originally written the songs sets during the First World War for piano accompaniment. In the 30s he orchestrated 3 songs from each set and it was these that were played. One of the song sets was for a princess but the other (surprisingly) was based on the Muslim call to prayer. Szy's style changed quite a bit over his lifetime but this music was from his exotic, impressionist phase - it was a violin + piano piece from this phase that first attracted me to him. I have a CD of his two SQs which are more like Bartok.

I have ordered a 2nd hand CD copy of the Naxos recording of the orchestral versions of op 31 and op 42. You might think I would drink Polish beer while l listened to this music but actually it was Czech beer - Zubr.
