It was my birthday - several cards had arrived. Radio 4 marked the day by getting Johnny Marr onto Today to talk about his collection of Fenders.

I watched the Sumburgh Head Puffincam and saw the puffin sitting on the eggs in the tunnel. A rabbit also appeared in the view outside the tunnel.

It was also the Queen's official birthday which she celebrated appropriately by giving an honour to John Cale - services to Nico, Patti Smith, Iggy Pop, Bryter Later, Hector Zazou etc? I thought maybe the military bands at Trooping the Colour might throw in a couple of his tunes (or even Fly or 60-40?) to put the seal on things but I didn't notice any - although I left part way through for Victoria station to meet my birthday lunch date. We drifted into Pimlico and found a Turkish restaurant approximately where one used to be and took our time over three courses and a very drinkable bottle of Turkish white. We discussed choral societies and what might be in her tape archive (circa 1977 Capital) awaiting digitisation including sessions from The Movies - maybe even some of their backing Joan Armatrading? I'd love to hear that again.

Once again I read Feenberg on Heidegger on the tube - I hadn't touched it since the previous trip to and from Victoria. I started from the beginning this time - I thought it went very smoothly. I must keep on reading it from beginning to end maybe on the Lille to Avignon trip? James phoned from Cambs to wish me a hb. He said he was going to watch the UK/US match.

I read AK's diary and looked up the FoF site which impressed me. I mailed the link to Dick Jones. The bear has taken to the King of Bohemia which shows all is not lost. New Scientist mentioned LastFM in passing. I found the graphic equaliser on the sound output of the Dell and lifted the highest frequency band which works on the Funk Bros backing tracks - back beat gtr and tmb. Then Dreamtime, Back in My Arms Again and I Surrender. I think I first heard that last one in Lycia. I could be working up to that Badiou review.

The quartal progressions are gradually coming together - but will they make a song? This all started with wanting to be able to replicate the devices that Hhancock uses in the songs on River. Another 5 note dominant goes from the top C# A E B F - a ninth sharp eleventh thirteenth - if your fingers are in trim you can play the G on the top string. It's an issue what kind of II chord would best precede that - if you raise the C# and the B you almost get a fourth chord of Cmajor - that is apart from the F at the bottom.

Some of the recent OOO bloggery has highlighted the importance of the concept 'translation'. Wikipedia explains:

'Translation - Central to ANT is the concept of translation in which innovators attempt to create a forum, a central network in which all the actors agree that the network is worth building and defending. Four moments are derived:

1. Problematisation What is the problem that needs to be solved? Who are the relevant actors? Delegates need to be identified that will represent groups of actors. So, a union head represents workers or a Member of Parliament represents his constituency. During problematisation, the primary actor tries to establish itself as an obligatory passage point (OPP) between the other actors and the network, so that it becomes indispensable.

2. Interessement

Getting the actors interested and negotiating the terms of their involvement. The primary actor works to convince the other actors that the roles it has defined them are acceptable.

3. Enrolment

Actors accept the roles that have been defined for them during interessement.

4. Mobilization of allies

Do the delegate actors in the network adequately represent the masses? If so, enrollment becomes active support'

This is common enough in human society - sometimes the concept of 'platform' is introduced to account for an innovative forum like, for example, Intel and USB. In fact I got an e/m this week with a questionnaire to do with attempts to form an e-platform on UK cleantec power generation. The hard bit is working out how the translation metaphor works in non-human situations.

I watched some of the evening TV on Trooping the Colour - still no sign of a musical hommage to John Cale from the massed bands. Surely a missed opportunity?

Will there be another time
Will there be another time
Another year, another wish to stay?

Will there be another time
Will there be another time
Another year, another wish to stay?

When the evening light wants to be so bright
And the morning sound is out of sight
Can there be another word to say
Or do we have to give it all away?

Many moons have to be found
At certain times you'll hear them pound
You can hear the hell bells praying

Many moons have to be found
At certain times you'll hear them pound
You can hear the hell bells praying

It is for granted hear their saying
We are all enchanted staying
Focussing on running down the drain
When those tears are carved inside your brain

New York Lower East Side fame
In a golden circle game
New York Lower East Side frame
New York Lower East Side fame
In a golden circle game
New York Lower East Side frame
Standing everywhere around
The fastest way to be found
At least I've given it away
To keep it only would have made me stay

Will there be another time?
Will there be another time?
