I heard Shostakovich's 5th Symphony on BBC4 played by a youth orchestra - they did it very well. I went out for some beer and got a new apple flavoured beer which is very easy to drink. Gilbert is at an important lute conference this weekend.
Two music books arrived. One is a study of Sonny Rollins, someone that D Graham liked especially. I have started with the transcription of a blues and with the II V extracts. It is similar to some aspects of Trane but possibly more wayward in terms of harmony.
The other book is an investigation of form in Boulez composition. I bought an mp3 album of his Memoriale, Derive 1 and Derive 2. M is a flute piece and is very agreeable. The book shows that the formal structure is very complex but I dont think that shows on the surface of the piece.
