Stuart Nicholson's book on jazz rock has arrived from Amazon along with my old jazz tutor's jazz course notes.

The SN book is an astonishing piece of work - it is an attempt to answer the question of what happened to jazz after the 60s as rock became a more dominant force. All kinds of great stuff in it - one example is some very good material on Detroit trumpeter Donald Byrd.

Gavin has mailed some excellent Detroit material - esp on the Tribe label which flourished their in the mid 1970s. Also a very insightful observation about the use of noise to optimise the beat on certain Tamla records.

I have borrowed James' 2 CD Best of Trane album and I listened to the CD as I drove into London this morning for a breakfast meeting with Tracy. Very interesting to hear the high spots from Blue Train through to My Fave Things end to end. What happens on disc 2 I wonder?

Tracy chose the Goring Hotel for our breakfast discussion which was ideal - its ever so slightly round the back of the Victoria one way system. She has made an incredible recovery through determined physiotherapy.

James seems to be enjoying Izvestia a lot - they have given him a sub-editting role to take articles up to a really high standard of English. At the same time he is getting some education on journalism. The initial lectures were very much about journalism in the Russian cultural context which is right up his street.

Yvonne says that James was excellent at sub-editting her thesis for her MA. If he can get professional sub-editting and proof reading under his belt then its a great core skill - always useful, not everyone can do it - and there will always be paid employment, I expect.

A million years ago I shared an office with an economist and got a bit interested in the conceptual foundations of economics - yesterday that paid off.
